Sugar and dental decay

Sugar can cause dental decay (caries) if consumed too frequently in foods and drinks (Cottrell, 2005). However, the evidence available clearly shows that a wide variety of carbohydrate-containing foods will contribute to the decay process if used in this way (König and Navia, 1995; FDI, 2000).

Sugar and high-carbohydrate diets and good health

A healthy balanced diet is essential for good health. The key to a healthy and balanced diet is to enjoy a variety of foods in moderation. Eating no more than needed is important, because over-consumption of anything will unbalance the diet, and in the case of some nutrients - fat and alcohol in particular - could also lead to health problems. As for variety, this will not only make the diet more interesting and enjoyable, but will also help ensure that an individual’s requirements for all the micronutrients - vitamins and minerals - are met.

Sugar, other carbohydrates and obesity

The balance of the available evidence suggests very strongly that eating a diet that contains a high proportion of fat encourages an increase in body fat stores (Bray and Popkin,1998; Astrup, 2001).This effect is probably mainly attributable to the high energy density of such diets (Poppitt, 1995) and the tendency of such diets to lead to a greater energy consumption before satiation. Individuals who do little physical work or exercise seem to be particularly likely to gain weight on a high fat diet (Stubbs et al.,1995). Conversely, a diet that is high in carbohydrate (and low in fat) seems to offer some protection against weight gain (Astrup, 2001a). Since this style of diet (high carbohydrate/low fat, especially low in saturated fat) is recommended for general health, especially cardiovascular health (Yu Poth et al., 1999; American Heart Association, 2002), it is now regarded as the most suitable diet for most people (Astrup, 2001b).
