Sugar and high-carbohydrate diets for the avoidance of coronary heart disease (CHD)
There is extremely good evidence that moderately low-fat diets (especially low in saturated fats) but high in carbohydrates, reduce the risk of CHD (Department of Health, 1994; Food and Agriculture Organization/ World Health Organization, 1998) by inducing favourable blood lipid profiles (Yu Poth et al., 1999). There is no persuasive evidence that sugar behaves differently from starchy carbohydrates in this regard (Department of Health, 1989; Saris et al., 2000).
